GORDON SOLOMON GALLERY & STUDIO, CAYMAN BRAC
Self-taught Caymanian artist Gordon Solomon, best known for his ‘spots of light’ technique, has no formal training. However, he has worked diligently for years to create a signature style that draws on graphic design skills, pointillism, and abstraction. Before opening his studio in Cayman Brac, Solomon worked as an outreach programme instructor for the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands. His work explores both traditional Caymanian heritage and current events.
For Cayman Art Week 2026, Gordon will launch The Fair Weather Project, 16 new original artworks that explore shipbuilding and seafaring while questioning why humans create objects that later become obsolete for the next generation; whether by fault or by design remains an open question. Rooted in the maritime heritage of the Cayman Islands, the exhibition reflects on the island’s proud shipbuilding tradition and the ongoing efforts to restore and preserve this vital craft.
At its heart is the story of the schooner Fair Weather, one of approximately 200 schooners historically built by Caymanians. Its recent restoration stands as a powerful symbol of cultural resilience, pride and continuity for both local communities and the Caymanian diaspora. The artworks draw inspiration from the vessel’s development and renewal, positioning it within the broader context of navigation and contemporary Cayman identity.
The collection includes ten imagined lighthouse paintings that serve as beacons of memory and guidance, four portraits of the dedicated team members who traveled to the UK to restore the Fair Weather and a triptych inspired by the song It's a Long Way to Tipperary, a musical reference that echoes themes of distance, endurance, and return.
